Home Sweet Road FAQ

Rucksack Universe Novella Q&A

Now and again folks send questions about my Rucksack Universe series, and about my upcoming new novella, Home Sweet Road. To put off writing another scene of Home Sweet Road I figured it’d be easiest to answer your questions in a quick post. If you have a question about Home Sweet Road, The Martini of Destiny or the Rucksack Universe series that you don’t see answered here, please contact me.

Really, another series? So I have to read these in order, right?

Nope. Like you, I sometimes get some serious Sequential Series Fatigue (ask your doctor about SSF). That’s why I’ve always planned for all Rucksack Universe stories to inter-relate but be fully enjoyed individually.

You can read Rucksack Universe stories in any order you like, rest assured that you will have an enjoyable read. There is no set reading order, and you don’t have to make sure you’ve read Book A to know what the hell’s going on in Book Z.

Like you, I have a limited appetite for a sequential series (other than, say, Harry Potter or Nightwatch, both of which I’m about to re-read for the fourth time). I envision the Rucksack Universe to be more like the 30+ novels of Terry Pratchett’s best-selling Discworld series: a varied cast in the same world, with titles that can build on each other but are made to be enjoyed independently.

What is Home Sweet Road about?

Set in Ireland after the events of The Martini of Destiny (but before the events of Forever the Road), Home Sweet Road is the story of an ordinary woman who hides extraordinary secrets from two men who are not what they seem—but neither is she.

Home Sweet Road also introduces you to new characters… and you’ll see more of some you’ve already met. You’ll also learn more about the Rucksack Universe itself, this world that is similar to ours—but different in so many crucial, and sometimes tragic, ways.

When is Home Sweet Road coming out?

The novella is still in development, and there’s a ways to go with drafting and revising before I’ll know a realistic publication date. Once I know, you’ll know. To know superspeed fast, click here to join my free mailing list.

What’s a novella?

A novella is the middle child in between short stories and novels. A typical novella is longer and more complex than a short story, but shorter and not as complex as a novel. Novellas are great quick reads, because the author can give you more story while keeping things simple.

Examples of famous novellas include Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea, Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, George Orwell’s Animal Farm, Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness and Stephen King’s The Body (which the movie Stand by Me is based on).

How long is a novella?
Definitions of exact length vary. At this point, any Rucksack Universe stories billed as novellas will be between 7,501-40,000 words (or 30-160 paperback pages) in length.

What formats will Home Sweet Road be available in?

Home Sweet Road will be released as an e-book in all formats (Kindle/.mobi, Nook/Kobo/etc./.epub) wherever e-books are sold.

What about a print book?

The downside of novellas is that doing print versions typically costs more than is worthwhile. (This is why you don’t see many novellas from publishers nowadays, though with e-books the novella seems to be making a comeback.)

For now I have a similar mindset, and Rucksack Universe novellas will only come out in e-book formats.

However…

Once I have published 3 Rucksack Universe novellas, I plan to release an e-book and print omnibus version that includes The Martini of Destiny, Home Sweet Road and… Well, that last one is another story for another time.

I am also taking a fresh look at what it would take to do print versions of The Martini of Destiny and Home Sweet Road, and will let you know if they will indeed come out in their own print editions.

Hmmm… Home Sweet Road… Why does this story sound familiar?

I briefly published a short story called Home Sweet Road, and had it available as a PDF freebie download. However, I’ve long since taken that down. The story wasn’t quite what I wanted it to be, and at the time I hadn’t developed the Rucksack Universe as fully as I have now. When it came time to plan another novella, the idea of making Home Sweet Road the story I knew it could be was an exciting prospect.

I’d like to tell you that your stories sound really [cool/crap], but you’re probably off on your white cloud ivory tower, aren’t you, you snooty git moody broody author person?

I would love to hear from you. Here is pretty much every way in creation to get in touch with me.

How can I keep up with what’s going on?

Also, any news about this story will be posted under the Home Sweet Road tag. In time I’ll add Home Sweet Road Special Features too.

And now I will close with a quick plug.

The Martini of Destiny, by Anthony St. ClairThe Martini of Destiny, the first release in the Rucksack Universe travel fiction series, is available now wherever you get your e-books. This novella provides a great first look at the Rucksack Universe.

Readers like you have been finding it a fun, quick read about an engaging, fascinating new world, and it doesn’t hurt my feelings at all that their reviews drop names like Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.

You can get The Martini of Destiny from Amazon.com, or see the book’s main page for more info and other stores.

You didn’t answer my question. What now?
