Oregon Business: Can Eugene Sell Itself — Without Selling Out?

Image: Oregon Business

I’ve lived in Eugene since 2000 and have seen how much this small city is changing—and how it also resists changing. It was really cool to get to write about this balance and conflict for the February 2016 edition of Oregon Business:

FOREVER THE ROAD is a Fantasy Best Book of 2015

FOREVER THE ROAD - 2015 Self-Published E-book Award Winner from SELF-e and Library Journal

I just got some pretty incredible news.

Which I’ll preface by saying, so, I’m not much of a winner.

I was never much for athletics. I did pretty well at public speaking in high school, and did some decent placing in forensics competitions for things like live readings. But I’ve never won contests or awards. Heck, I don’t even care for going to Las Vegas or buying a lottery ticket, because I’m about as good at gambling as a footstool is at astrophysics.

But all that said, I just won something.

Library Journal is a major US trade publication that librarians use for figuring out books to add to their collections. The LJ has a new service called SELF-e, which helps indie authors like me gain broader access to libraries for e-books. As part of the setup process, I also entered my 3 e-books (The Martini of Destiny, Home Sweet Road, and Forever the Road) in a free competition for their 2015 Self-Published Ebook Awards.

And I just got word that FOREVER THE ROAD won Fantasy Honorable Mention.

Forever the Road, Rucksack Universe Book #3

It’s not first prize, but I’ll take it with glee. It’s validation. It’s a nod from the industry. And I gotta say, it still feels pretty darn good.

Speaking of the Fantasy category, you should also check out the other Honorable Mention, Shelbi Wescott’s After Life, and winner Dave Ferraro’s Yokai. I’ve already snagged samples for my Kindle. The other 3 genre categories were Science Fiction, Romance, and Mystery, and be sure to check out and support those authors too.

Of course, if you or someone you know is interested in FOREVER THE ROAD, you can snag an e-book or signed trade paperback copy here.

Thank you for being along with me on this journey… and here’s to what’s next on the way.

MystiCon

One of the Southeast US’s top science fiction and fantasy conventions returns for a sold-out year! I’ll be appearing at Roanoke, VA’s MystiCon, alongside some fantastic names:

As a co-signer of author John Scalzi’s Convention Harassment Policy, I’m also glad that MystiCon has a good behavior and harassment policy in place.

I can hardly wait for this event. If you’ve already gotten your MystiCon ticket, I’ll see you there. If not, I’m afraid the convention recently sold out of all its tickets.

October Eugene Craft Beer News

Laurelwood Fresh Hop Red Alepouring beautifully

A photo posted by Beergarden. (@beergardenme) on

Recently I had the pleasure of going to Beergarden, a new Eugene pub with indoor/outdoor seating, an excellent tap list of craft beers, meads, ciders, and more, and a food cart pod out back.

Beergarden was a wonderful example of a convivial, cozy space where you can pass a pleasant evening. The food carts had diverse selections, a band played in the corner, and groups and solo drinkers alike were enjoying some of the finest craft beer to be found anywhere. I can’t wait to go back.

NEW: Get Rucksack Universe e-books from your library with Library Journal, BiblioBoard & SELF-e

A new library-focused partnership from Library Journal and Biblioboard

Get Anthony St. Clair e-books from your library with Library Journal SELF-e Select

Some good news came in to the Rucksack Press world headquarters this week. A while back I submitted all 3 of my books—The Martini of Destiny, Home Sweet Road, and Forever the Road—to a new e-book service for libraries, SELF-e, from Library Journal and BiblioBoard.

SELF-e - e-books for libraries, powered by Library JournalI love libraries, and my family and I are big supporters of our local Eugene Public Library. (We were even part of an early literacy public awareness video campaign.) Making my e-books  widely available in libraries is a big deal to me. I use my library to find books I want to buy, as well as for research for my stories. Having my e-books available for free to readers through libraries is part of giving back to the public and to the library.

My books are part of SELF-e curated collections. They’ll be featured selections shared with subscribing libraries all over the US on BiblioBoard Library. The first Library Journal SELF-e Select collections are expected to be available to libraries this month, making them available to readers nationwide.

Oregon readers and Oregon libraries looking for Oregon authors can also find my books in SELF-e’s Indie State module as a “highlighted selection.” SELF-e is also updating their GoodReads group with selections.

See you at the library!
