Day 80: It’s Getting Real

Pre-Order FOREVER THE ROAD, Kindle Edition

On Aug. 14, 2014, Amazon announced that indie authors now could also use Amazon’s pre-order feature. I immediately set this up for FOREVER THE ROAD, one of the first indie authors to do so.

I broke the Sunday Rule. My wife and I are both self-employed, so it’s easy for us to work pretty much all the time. We have a rule that Sundays are a no-work day for us. It ensures that we have at least one day where the work tasks are left alone and we do other things.

Well, yesterday I broke that rule. Jodie was napping, and Connor was watching Winnie the Pooh. On Saturday I had begun setting up Forever the Road at a new distributor, but hadn’t finished. So on Sunday I took about 15 minutes and worked on it a little more. Guilt-ridden, I also confessed my transgression to Jodie as soon as she woke up. I certainly don’t want to make a habit of breaking the Sunday Rule, but I’m also glad I moved that new setup along.

What can I say? It’s been a busy, busy past few days at Author HQ. There may be less than a month to go before Forever the Road launches on Sept. 8, but there’s more to do than ever. Behind the scenes I’m doing interviews, setting up distribution accounts, and rocking some new opportunities for indie authors. Here’s some of the latest…

You Can Now Pre-Order FOREVER THE ROAD at Amazon’s Kindle Store

Pre-order Forever the Road at Amazon

I’ve waited for (and pestered) Amazon to open up pre-orders to indie authors. So glad to see this finally happen!
And yes, my Kindle’s name is Yakisoba.

On Aug. 14, 2014, Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing announced that indie authors now could also use Amazon’s pre-order feature. Previously open to various publishers and some big-name author/publishers, pre-order is something indie authors like me have requested for a long time. Once word came, I immediately set up pre-orders for Forever the Road, one of the first indie authors to take advantage.

So at long last, Amazon has joined the ranks of booksellers offering e-book pre-orders to all indie authors who want to take advantage (thank you, Amazon!). You can now pre-order the Forever the Road e-book edition at these stores:

Buy now from the Amazon Kindle Store

Get it on iBooks

Buy from Smashwords

Buy now from Kobo

Buy now from Barnes and Noble

P.S.: “But what about the paperback?” you ask. We’ll talk about that more tomorrow.

New Author Interview

AF Stewart's Author Interview with Anthony St. Clair

AF Stewart’s Author Interview with me.

And, on Aug. 16-17, 2014, fantasy writer A.F. Stewart posted her author interview with me, and her Book Spotlight on Forever the Road.

Here’s an excerpt from the interview:

Q: Travel is a big part of your narratives, and you’ve had your own travel adventures. How much of what went into your books is from firsthand experience, and how much is from other research?

A: I use my boots-on-the-ground travel experiences to bring depth and verisimilitude to everything I write, while steering clear of the autobiographical. Of course, there are elements of my travels and person in my stories and characters—there’s a reason black coffee and stout beer are two of the four most important drinks in the Rucksack Universe! (Hmm. Suddenly, I’m thirsty.)

Forever the Road is set in India, in the fictional city of Agamuskara, which was founded by the first people to settle in the subcontinent. The city—and its river of the same name—is reminiscent of Varanasi with its dirty-yet-holy river, crowds, fascinating and diverse people, narrow streets, and heat.

Faddah Rucksack, one of my world’s main characters, says that “The only thing you can expect about India is that it will be itself.” And it’s true. India is a very in-your-face-with-everything-there-is-in-the-world country. It is intense, and pretty much every extreme of humanity and life co-exists there, often side by side.

I also use research to round out my knowledge or check details. However, one of the benefits of writing fiction is I can also make things up to fit the story, while also making the story fit the world. However, if I’m setting a story somewhere, I want to have traveled there too, because there are things you only learn from experience.

Are You Afraid of the Dark?: Book Spotlight: Forever The Road »

Yeah, it’s been an intense few days.

Yet it still feels like we’re just getting started. Thanks for being along for the ride!

That’s the news—for now—from the Rucksack Universe, where the beer is always fresh, all the locals are friendly, and the food never makes you sick.

“It’s my turn to save you. Move your arse. Don’t you dare let me go unavenged.”

Day 75: The world’s greatest traveler

Jay. Backpacker. Wanderer. Globetrotter. A little bumbling, a little lost… but always going.

I-learned-to-love-my-solitude_AnthonyStClair_ForevertheRoad

Readers like you first met Jay in Home Sweet Road, but he’s been a friend of mine for a long, long time.

(Not really, folks. I’m a fantasy author. That’s pretty much a blank check excuse for having imaginary friends when you’re no longer 4 years old.)

“Travel wasn’t supposed to be easy.”

Jay travels for his own reasons. He tries over and over to be an ordinary guy on the road, but he keeps winding up in extraordinary situations. He doesn’t like it. He’s rather prone to denial. But in Forever the Road, he won’t be able to deny the crazy circumstances around him anymore.

From the Book

“There’s nothing special about him. He’s the embodiment of average. Average height. Average build. Okay, maybe a little muscle and slenderness from traveling with that pack on his back. The face isn’t bad. Good chin. I like the brown hair.”

Day 71: 1 Month Till Forever the Road

You made a decision. Then, down the road, you realized you were wrong. And as an example, let’s say you figured that out about a month ahead of your third book coming out. So what do you do about it?

The short answer is simple. You own up, apologize, mean it, and do something else.

For me, that means owning up and saying I’m sorry about a mistake I made with Forever the Road.

About The Mistake

One of the great things about running my business is that as both an author and a publisher, I ultimately have the say over my work and how it goes out into the world. Content, cover, distribution, pricing, you name it. I love being the captain not only of my soul, but of my creative work.

One of the difficult things about running my business is that as both an author and a publisher, I ultimately have the say over my work.

Yes, I did say the same thing there.

When something is wrong, the error is likely down to me and a decision I made. Like Dumbledore in Harry Potter, I won’t be so arrogant as to claim total control or blame, but when you run your own business, odds are a mistake has something to do with a decision you made, not somebody else.

So where did I screw up?

The cover? No. It’s distinctive, true to my brand as an author, and frankly, the cover looks really damn cool. The story? No. Sure, I’ll do better on the next books, but that’s because learning is a never-ending process. I’m really happy with the story.

I screwed up on the e-book price.

My Mistake

Now, the e-book editions of The Martini of Destiny and Home Sweet Road are $2.99. For Forever the Road, I had originally announced the e-book price would be $5.99.

And that was my mistake.

It took me a while to put my finger on it. That price never fully sat well with me. Since setting it back in late May, I’ve done some researching and soul-searching, and decided that I was wrong.

So I’m changing the price. Because, as I said, one of the great things about running my business is that I make the decisions.

Now To Do Something Else

Effective immediately, the e-book price of Forever the Road is…

$4.99

Less than a fiver. Less than many foofy coffee drinks. Less than most cocktails.

And, if I may say, far more enjoyable, though also excellent when accompanied by any of the above tasty treats.

So my apologies. If you’ve already pre-ordered the Forever the Road e-book, since you aren’t charged until release day that should all work out fine and you’ll pay the lower price of $4.99. (After launch, if you were charged more, contact the retailer and also let me know. If need-be, I’ll mail you a buck to make things right.)

Onward. To good decisions. To mistakes. And to better decisions that make good.

Keeping good company

Day 67: Book Signing at the 2014 Willamette Writers Conference

20140804-150721.jpg

Diana Gabaldon, with nerd

I’m going to give you a full confession…

Until this past weekend, I was not familiar with Diana Gabaldon and her Outlander series. Not the books. Not the musical. Not the new TV show that’s about to premier on Starz.

But holy crap, I am now.

As you may or may not know, I’m about to step down from 3 years as the co-chair of the Mid-Valley Chapter of Willamette Writers. This past weekend we held our annual Willamette Writers Conference in Portland, and Diana was the keynote speaker at our Saturday Gala Awards Banquet.

I was a total live-tweeting fanboy, btw:

As if the keynoting wasn’t enough, the gods—or Amazon, if there is a difference anymore—are telling me there’s an affinity between my wee Rucksack Universe and Diana’s books. Her name and titles keep appearing in Amazon recommendations.

I figured I’d better take the hint. Now rather motivated to learn more about Diana and her books, I spent some time on her website. The Outlander premise is fascinating, and I felt into the story without having even opened one of the books yet.

Then, listening to her keynote, I was constantly nodding and fist-pumping as she talked about her work ethic, related how she got part of the idea for Outlander from a be-kilted Doctor Who companion, and shared some bawdy, hilarious one-liners, jokes, and anecdotes.

20140804-150613.jpg

Diana Gabaldon was the keynote speaker at the Awards Banquet for the 2014 Willamette Writers Conference in Portland, Oregon.

When she was done speaking, the audience gave a standing ovation. I snuck out, bought the first Outlander book, and was fourth in line to get an autograph—and it turned out to be a very, very long line.

Despite getting back to my room at something like 12:30 in the morning, I still read the first chapter of Outlander. And watched the series trailer again:

Now I’m hooked.

I’ve just about got the shakes. I’m actually typing this in the back of a colleague’s Subaru Outback as we return to Eugene after the conference. My copy of Outlander is in my backpack, which is in the cargo area, completely out of arm’s reach.

Damnit.

Meeting Diana and hearing her speak was a big reminder of what I’m looking forward to in my own author journey: seeing where my work goes, where it takes me, who I meet along the way, and how amazed I’ll wind up being at what happens next.

Thanks, Diana.

You definitely gained a new fanboy this weekend. Even though I’m only just starting the first Outlander book, I already can’t wait for the ninth installment.

From the Book

“Merit does not always play into the world’s decisions. The greatest loves and choices often come from the unlikeliest people. One day they find themselves on a path they didn’t know they were taking, and they simply do the best they can. Sometimes life’s best hope is the most improbable chance.”

Day 66: Speculative Fiction Author Shah Wharton Features FOREVER THE ROAD

Shah Warton - Rucksack Universe, Anthony St. Clair, Forever the Road

Shah Warton, author of Finding Esta, is featuring me and FOREVER THE ROAD at her blog:

“An avid reader who loves to live the world, Anthony knew he wasn’t the only traveler who always needs a good book on the road. He is a long-time fan of Douglas Adams, Tom Robbins and Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series, as well as television shows such as Doctor Who, Firefly and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Anthony’s Rucksack Universe travel fiction brings a similar off-the-cuff, irreverent, ordinarily profound, fantastical spin to globetrotting, indie travel and life itself.

Day 60: Tales Travelers Tell

“I heard there was this guy, went to the top of Mount Everest and back in a night.”
Forever the Road

Travelers like to tell tales. The story could be about an adventure, or sex, or an impossible journey to an impossible place.

Sometimes there is more than a hint of truth to the tale. This is when you must be at your wariest.

Sometimes a story seems so outlandish it couldn’t possibly be true. This is when you may be in the presence of something really real.

When you’re on the road, you never really know how true a story is—even when it’s your own.

And as we’ll learn in Forever the Road, the outlandish is often just embellishment that distracts attention from the plain truth underneath. A story begins to spread… about a lone traveler, who one full moon night at Everest Base Camp in Tibet, went up to the summit of Mount Everest, Qomolungma, and back.

Is it true? What of it is true?

And if it is true, what does it mean?

From the Book

“How I am glad to have seen such a moment of magic on a moonlit night by the mountain of the world.”

Day 50: Halfway to Forever

Halfway to forever. I can hardly believe I just wrote that. In 50 more days, my biggest, most complex, best-ride-yet book comes out.

But that isn’t what matters. It’s not why you’re here today. It’s not even why I’m here.

We’re here because we’re sharing a journey.

There was a starting point. Somewhere, still out of sight but not out of mind, is the destination.

And here, now, is the middle. We’ve already gone so far—and we still have so far to go.

The midpoint, that agony and ecstasy of halfway, is what’s on my mind today.

Starting out

You know that feeling, when you’ve committed to something? You’ve had all that excitement, all that raw power and pure, unshakeable, inexhaustible possibility course through you.

Then there’s the anxiety. The doubt. The sheer damn dread, that all this was a damn stupid idea.

Despite that, whatever you committed to, whatever you began, you’re underway.

This time is different

Maybe there was a time when you didn’t commit. Or maybe you committed, but fizzled out and didn’t follow through. But whatever was then, this is now. Whatever you gave up doing, this isn’t that. Whatever false-yet-convincing safe haven sheltered you before, you left it behind.

You committed then, and every day you’ve committed again. Today you’re still going.

Following through

You’re bare to the world, naked of soul and intent. There’s nothing scarier. Yet there’s nothing more potent, more powerful, more focused and exciting, than following through.

Your every nerve might be raw before the sandstorm of the world, but you’re still going.

The midpoint is heaven and hell. Everything you dreamed, everything you feared, and yet still beyond everything you ever could have imagined.

You’re so scared.

You’re so excited.

It’s like vomiting an orgasm.

And that, my friend, is where I am right now.

In 2003, on a trip to India, I knew I would write an amazing book.

In 2011, I quit my job to tell the stories I knew I had to tell, unless I went to my death bed broken and full of regret that I never tried.

And now, in 2014 and with 2 published books under my belt, I’m 50 days away from one of the biggest moments of my life. Some days I’m elated. Some days I feel like I want to puke. Some days I know I’m finding new fans. Some days the only thing I know is I’m shouting into an abyss.

Yet, no matter how hard and amazing this journey has been, you know what really makes me smile? The past 11 years, all these travels, quitting my job, all the work that’s gone into these last 3 years?

It’s a big step, but it’s still just a first step.

Forever the Road is only the beginning. There are so many more stories to tell, more roads to travel, more yeses and worlds to live.

We’re halfway through this particular journey, but there’s only one thing to do. No matter what, at the end of the day there’s always only one thing to do.

Take the next step.

And then the next and the next, until you get where you’re going. So you can see where you want to go after that.

Onward, friends.

No matter what.

From the Book

“Ever since I’ve been on the road, all I’ve learned is that there’s so much I’ll never know. One of the few things I know is that life is how we deal with the road in front of us. There’s always a choice. Even if it doesn’t seem like a good one, there’s a choice you can make.”
