Short Description

A special martini gives courage to a doubting man, a ghost doesn’t pay for his pints, a destiny-slinging bartender questions everything, and the world will never be the same.

Grab your passport, have a pint and live the world of the Rucksack Universe! The novella The Martini of Destiny (link: http://wp.me/P3zrGS-1vW) introduces us to the globetrotters, mischief makers and slightly inhuman beings who keep the world turning. Combining elements of urban fantasy, indie travel, noir, science fiction and alternate history, this novella is the first in a disconnected series told in the spirit of Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Tom Robbins and Douglas Adams.

Long Description

A special martini gives courage to a doubting man, a ghost doesn’t pay for his pints, a destiny-slinging bartender questions everything, and the world will never be the same.

You know what it’s like: You can’t figure out which direction to take next in life. So you head to your friendly favorite watering hole for a drink and a little clarity. Jake is the man behind the bar; for everywhere you’ve gone in the world, it seems like the bartender is always named Jake. After a drink or two, you know what you must decide. It’s as if you were destined to do it. Back out into the world you go: resolved, inspired and none the wiser about what Jake added to your drink to help you along.

Bartender Jake Hongkong has served drinks, decisions and destinies for The Management longer than any other Jake or Jade. He knows when a person needs more than just a drink, he knows exactly what they need and he knows the destiny they need to decide. But when he serves more than a martini to a scared man in love, Jake for the first time questions how he affects people’s lives, especially when his actions are for the sake of a woman he’ll never meet. Then a ghost vanishes from the pub without paying for his pints—and after stealing something precious of Jake’s. Jake gives chase, only to see something he wasn’t meant to see. This decision’s consequences ripple through destiny and change lives forever.

Reviews & Social Media

The Martini of Destiny is a great quick read. St. Clair’s work is funny without overreaching. A great familiar setting for those of us living on earth, with a nice twist of fantasy splashed throughout. Perfect for fans of Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. I can’t wait to see where this author’s work leads me!

Beautiful prose, smart humor and a slanted take on reality combine to make a delightful story of destiny and control (or the lack thereof.) It’s a short tale, but riveting. St. Clair sets up a vivid world that seems both plausible and beyond the realm of possibility.

Anthony St Clair has bestowed a literary gift upon communities of readers with his debut fiction, The Martini of Destiny. I can barely wait to read more from the Rucksack Universe! Reminiscent of Terry Prachett, Neil Gaiman, Brian Jacques, but buoyant with a unique humor, twist and focus on international travel. It went down quick and I loved every moment.
