Most days I'm a dried-fruit-and-granola-with-yogurt guy, but sometimes I need a hot, filling bowl of oatmeal. Our gray winter, and especially these last few chilly, dark days, have had me in the kitchen fine-tuning a hot cereal mix.
Mix together:
- 3 c. oats
- 1 c. raisins
- 1 c. cherries
- 1/2 c. wheat germ
- 1/2 c. wheat bran
- 1/4 c. flax meal
- 1/8 c. flax seeds
- 1/2 c. pumpkin seeds
- 1/2 c. sunflower seeds
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. ground cardamom
- 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
- 2 c. nuts (cashews, almonds, walnuts, etc.)
At breakfast, scoop out 1/3 c. – 1/2 c. and mix with 1/3-1/2 c. water. Microwave 1 minute, 15 seconds. Add sweetener of your choice — honey or maple syrup are two of my favorites.
Enjoy!
Hi,
I live in Eugene, I love foods, and I blog, too! So much in common ^_^
Although I’m personally staying away from gluten (I suspect I have some food allergies and my naturopath doc is testing me now), this sounds quite nice.
And keep up the good work!
Akemi
Glad you liked it! If trying to avoid gluten, what are some alternatives for something such as a hot cereal?
Well, pseudo grains such as amaranth, quinoa, buckwheat, and millet are gluten free. Rice is also good. There are also gluten free oats — Bob’s Red Mill makes them.
