Today’s Oneword: Savage

The Oneword website is a daily writing exercise where you have 60 seconds to write something based on one word. I use it to give both you and me a daily 1-minute glimpse into the Rucksack Universe of travel fiction stories:

The dust looked more trodden down here, and the long strip that stretched to the horizon seemed to have fewer plants. That wasn’t exactly a road, but it would do. He started walking it.

“If you meet anyone there,” he recalled the stranger in the pub saying, “it’ll likely be a savage.”

“There are no savages,” he replied. “There are just people you don’t yet understand.”

As the sun finally waned into the early darkness of evening, he caught whiffs of smoke.

Now he would learn.
