Day 60: Tales Travelers Tell

“I heard there was this guy, went to the top of Mount Everest and back in a night.”
Forever the Road

Travelers like to tell tales. The story could be about an adventure, or sex, or an impossible journey to an impossible place.

Sometimes there is more than a hint of truth to the tale. This is when you must be at your wariest.

Sometimes a story seems so outlandish it couldn’t possibly be true. This is when you may be in the presence of something really real.

When you’re on the road, you never really know how true a story is—even when it’s your own.

And as we’ll learn in Forever the Road, the outlandish is often just embellishment that distracts attention from the plain truth underneath. A story begins to spread… about a lone traveler, who one full moon night at Everest Base Camp in Tibet, went up to the summit of Mount Everest, Qomolungma, and back.

Is it true? What of it is true?

And if it is true, what does it mean?

From the Book

“How I am glad to have seen such a moment of magic on a moonlit night by the mountain of the world.”
